Supporting the Community

These are some of the projects that we have supported through community sponsorships. While sponsorship is the largest area of financial assistance we provide for the community, we also make donations to a range of causes including schools, community special events and charitable organisations.

Annual Beach Clean Up

For several years, New Zealand Steel has organised a clean up of the local beach (covering around 16kms). Each year the Company is supported by employees, their families and friends who join forces with the Department of Conservation, local authorities and the Kariotahi Beach Care Group to roll up their sleeves and take part in the clean up.

DARE (Drug Abuse Training Programme)

Since 2003 funding support from New Zealand Steel has enabled the DARE drug and violence awareness programme to be available in local schools. The eight week skills for life programme run by the Police encourages children to 'dare to make a choice', in other words to make their own decisions rather than giving in to peer pressure.

Fire Safety Trailer

New Zealand steel grasped the opportunity to support the NZ Fire Services to raise injury prevention awareness in the community by donating a Mobile Safety Fire Demonstrator Unity for the Counties Manukau Fire districts. The purpose built education trailer enables a graphic demonstration of the dangers of kitchen fires and advice is given on how to put them out safely. The Company saw this as a practical way of working with communities to protect what they value.

RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness)

Since 2007 New Zealand Steel has been a primary sponsor of RYDA NZ - a role that it shares with BOC. The programme targets 15-16 year olds who are at the stage of their lives when they start to drive or ride in a vehicle driven by their peers.

New Zealand Steel is proud to support RYDA because of the impact road accidents have on young people and families and particularly because it is a good fit with safety being our core value at New Zealand Steel.

Trees for Survival

In 2006 New Zealand Steel became a supporting organisation of the nationwide Trees for Survival Charitable Trust (TfS) to link school children to growing and planting native trees.

The TfS growing units are compact and purpose-designed to fit into school grounds. The children plant seeds and when germinated prick them into small pots and finally pot them into one-litre waxed cardboard milk containers. The young trees are then planted on private land, farms or lifestyle blocks, on erosion-prone land, riparian (streamside) or wetland areas.
